Following a £450,000 investment, SEA LIFE Scarborough, which attracts around 120–130,000 visitors a year, has unveiled its new solar panel roof which aims to reduce its energy bills and energy consumption by utilising renewable energy.
The investment by owners Merlin Entertainment is part of their strategy to install renewable energy across their sites. The installation at Scarborough will reduce the annual CO2 output by 13.4 tonnes and at peak power, the panels will be able to produce 73.5MWh of electricity giving an average saving of around 10% per year on energy costs.

SEA LIFE Manager Andrew Clay said: “We are absolutely delighted with the new roof, which has exceeded our expectations. The building looks completely revitalised and we’re thrilled that so many people have noticed. Sustainability is a key part of our work, and the new roof perfectly represents our continuing efforts to be more environmentally responsible. Merlin’s investment is a great endorsement of Scarborough Sealife, but also the wider visitor economy on the glorious Yorkshire Coast.”
