Scarborough is set for a historic spectacle this summer, as a stunning replica of the 16th-century Spanish galleon, Nao Victoria, docks in Scarborough harbour for two weeks.

The full-scale replica of the first ship to circumnavigate the globe over 500 years ago will be moored at North Wharf Quay and open to the public from Thursday 26 June until Sunday 6 July.  The ship offers an immersive experience, allowing guests to explore its decks and discover the incredible story of its legendary crew, led by Juan Sebastián Elcano.

Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the decks, discovering more about the historical and social context that led to one of the greatest maritime feats in the history of navigation, and talk to members of the crew, real sailors who live as they did 500 years ago.

Following the success of the Galeón Andalucía’s visit last summer, which drew thousands of visitors to Scarborough, anticipation is high for the imminent arrival of the Nao Victoria.

Local traders, including seafront business operator Rudi Barman, have welcomed the news. He said: “The Nao Victoria is a truly striking vessel that will undoubtedly become a standout feature in the harbour, enhancing the town’s waterfront and complementing its existing tourism offering.

“We look forward to her arrival with great anticipation and commend Visit North Yorkshire and North Yorkshire Council for their vision in bringing this initiative to life.”

Funded by Visit North Yorkshire, the ship’s stay is expected to draw thousands of additional visitors to the town, offering a welcome boost to local businesses.
