Maximising on event opportunities

North Yorkshire has a packed calendar of events that take place throughout the year. From internationally renowned festivals focused on literature, live music and art to foodie events celebrating local produce to agricultural shows that honour the tradition of our county. Whatever the time of year, there are great festivals and events are happening across North Yorkshire.

Events give people a reason to visit a destination now, rather than thinking they’ll visit sometime in the future, and an event gives a focus to their trip. Alongside showcasing the range of events in North Yorkshire, it’s our job to encourage event goers to stay longer and explore whilst they are here.

This year, we are working closely with two of North Yorkshire’s large events to do just that.

The Great Yorkshire Show, now in its 166th year, is a popular agricultural show and a flagship event for Harrogate which sees over 140,000 visitors head to the Great Yorkshire Showground every July. Whilst the show attracts a local audience, it also reaches into the wider Yorkshire area, the Northeast and beyond, providing an engaged audience to whom we can showcase North Yorkshire’s fantastic visitor offer beyond the Great Yorkshire Show.

For 2025, we have formed a partnership with the organisers of the event, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, to promote the “stay longer, explore more” message to showgoers.  The pre-event marketing activity includes a banner advert included in all ticket confirmation emails, an advert listing on the Where to Stay webpage, a sponsored social media post, a banner in three Great Yorkshire Show emails, and a sponsored Where to Stay email to the Great Yorkshire Show database. At the event, we will have two gate banners where there is high footfall into the showground, encouraging visitors to explore more of North Yorkshire during their stay.

Similarly, we are working collaboratively with the organisers of the Long Course Weekend, as the Yorkshire event returns to Masham for its second year in August 2025. The multi-sport festival invites athletes to take on running, cycling and swimming routes across the weekend. We are working with the team to encourage participants and their supporters to enjoy more of what Masham and surrounding areas have to offer. We are curating content on the visit North Yorkshire website about Long Course Weekend, Masham including accommodation, food and drink, attractions, and activities. We are writing blogs on wild swimming, cycling, running, and outdoor activities. Within the Long Course Weekend Yorkshire digital race pack sent to athletes before the event, we will feature messaging and imagery encouraging athletes and their supporters to explore beyond the finish line while they are in Masham, and to return afterwards to have even more amazing experiences in North Yorkshire.
