A suite of new visitor signage and interpretation boards is helping to enhance the experience of North Yorkshire’s towns, villages and landscapes. The improved signage in Northallerton, Selby, and Leyburn aims to make it easier for visitors to explore and discover the county’s rich heritage. Delivered as part of the Place priority within North Yorkshire’s Destination Management Plan, the ongoing initiative supports both visitors and residents by improving navigation, showcasing local identity, and reinforcing pride in place.

Helping visitors navigate with confidence

Clear and consistent signage plays an important role in shaping how visitors experience a destination. The newly installed wayfinding and interpretation boards encourage visitors to explore more widely and spend longer in our places. By improving orientation and highlighting key routes and amenities, the signage helps visitors to feel more confident in their surroundings.

Bringing stories to life through interpretation

Alongside improved wayfinding, the new interpretation boards showcase the unique stories, heritage and character that North Yorkshire is renowned for. In Selby, Visit North Yorkshire collaborated with Selby Civic Society to showcase Selby’s rich history through historical information and archive images in the town centre and Selby Park. By showcasing local history and cultural heritage, the boards provide engaging and informative content that deepens visitors’ understanding of the place and creates more memorable experiences.

Building pride in place

As well as benefitting visitors, the signage and interpretation project has a strong focus on supporting communities and fostering pride in place. The high-quality, thoughtfully designed signage shows care and investment in our places. For residents, it reinforces local identity in what makes their town or village special. For businesses, it contributes to a more attractive and welcoming environment that encourages repeat visits. Working in partnership with local stakeholders, including local community partnerships, civic societies, and the National Parks, the initiative reflects a shared ambition to create places that people to feel proud to live in, work in, and visit.
